City of Saints · Punjab

Multan does not perform. It keeps.

Five thousand years on a mound. Six gates in the wall. Blue tile on red brick. Mangoes that have a season and shrines that do not. This desk starts here — Buch Villas, DHA, Model Town, Cantt, Gulgasht, then the doors: Haram, Pak, Delhi, Bohar, Lohari, Daulat.

Saints and the fort

Shah Rukn-e-Alam’s tomb (1320–24) is the three-tiered red-brick octagon on the fort: battered Tughluq walls, eight corner towers, dark shisham beams, blue-and-white Multani tile, a white dome. Bahauddin Zakariya’s shrine sits nearby. Musa Pak is inside Pak Gate. Urs is not a festival imported for tourists — it is the city’s calendar. Over a hundred thousand people still walk for Rukn-e-Alam.

The six gates

The Faseel-e-Multan, rebuilt in 1756 and under restoration now, still has six named doors, anti-clockwise: Lohari, Bohar, Haram, Pak, Delhi, Daulat. Between them: forty-seven stairways in the wall — a second city stacked on brick. Bloody Bastion sits on the turn between Pak and Delhi, a name the British siege left. Walk the wall at maghrib. That is the culture, not a brochure.

Blue, mango, heat

Multani kaashi — cobalt and turquoise on brick — is the city’s colour. So is dust. So is the Chaunsa mango in summer. The old bazaar at Hussain Agahi still sells cloth, gold, pickle, and blue pottery in the same breath as a naat. New Multan (Bosan, Gulgasht, Buch Villas, DHA) eats later and drives more. Both are the city.

Language and night

Saraiki is the ground language; Punjabi and Urdu sit on top. Qawwali at the shrines, dholak in wedding streets, the azan off the Faseel. Nights in the walled city are walking nights. Nights in Cantt and Buch Villas are verandah nights. X files both.

Eat

  • Sohan halwa — the city’s sweet, ghee and nuts, packed for the road
  • Multani chaamp and barbecue after maghrib
  • Mango season (Chaunsa) — not a restaurant, a month
  • Hussain Agahi snacks and shrine langar on urs days

Hear

  • Qawwali at Shah Rukn-e-Alam and Bahauddin Zakariya
  • Urs processions — dhol, rose, the crowd as instrument
  • Saraiki folk in the lanes after Isha

Walk

  • The six gates, anti-clockwise, starting Lohari
  • Faseel stairways between Delhi and Lohari
  • Fort mound to the octagon at blue hour
  • Bosan Road evening in Gulgasht
